FlipSide guide 9/4/14: York Fair, Boutique Week First Friday, Baltimore Comic-Con

Special events:
— Check out our York Fair page to find a map, previews, concert lineups and celebrity interviews. The fair runs Friday to Sunday, Sept. 14, at the fairgrounds, 334 Carlisle Ave., West Manchester Township. Locals compete in the Grandstand Challenge 7:30 p.m. Friday. Lady Antebellum headlines a grandstand show 7:30 p.m. Saturday.
First Friday in York continues Boutique Week and will include a fashion show at Central Market, 34 W. Philadelphia St., and an art opening at Martin Library, 159 E. Market St.
— Encounter characters and cosplayers during Baltimore Comic-Con. It runs 1 to 7 p.m. Friday, 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday. Fans can meet celebrity guests, illustrators and comic book creators at the Baltimore Convention Center, 1 W. Pratt St., Baltimore. [Admission is $25 to $30 per day or $55 for the weekend]

Festivals and food:
— Barbecue teams from across the country will compete for trophies and cash prizes 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday during the Annual Southern York County BBQ Cook-Off at the Markets at Shrewsbury, 12025 Susquehanna Trail South, Shrewsbury Township. The event teamed up with the York Rescue Mission to help feed the needy.
The Rumschpringe International Film Festival begins 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at The Ware Center, 42 N. Prince St., Lancaster, with a reprise of notable films that have been shown at past fests. It coincides with First Friday festivities in Lancaster. Festival events run in October and November.
— Enjoy a delicious day that includes more than 100 different flavors during the Whoopie Pie Festival 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday at Hershey Farm Restaurant & Inn, Route 896, Strasburg. Crafts, face painting and pony rides will part of the event.
The Lancaster Craft Beerfest returns Saturday in the 100 block of Queen Street, Lancaster. It will feature 76 craft beers, food and music. Sessions start at 3 and 4 p.m. [Tickets range from $12 to $55. Last year sold out.]
— Celebrate the grape harvest 12:30 to 6 p.m. Saturday and Sunday during the Gettysburg Wine & Music Festival at the Gateway Gettysburg Complex, 95 Presidential Circle. [$25 at the gate for adults; discounts for kids and designated drivers]
— Enjoy wine and bands 2 to 8 p.m. Sunday during the Folk Festival at Moon Dancer Winery, 1282 Klines Run Road, Lower Windsor Township. [$15, includes limited wine tasting; discounts for kids]

On stage:
— The Central Pennsylvania Friends of Jazz joined Dauphin County Parks to present a special night of music 6:30 p.m. Friday during the Dauphin County Jazz and Wine Festival at Fort Hunter Park. Tim Warfield will perform with various musicians in his organ band. Bands are also scheduled 4 to 9 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday. [Weekend passes are $25 to $30]
— More than a dozen acts are part of the Pennsylvania Gospel Music Festival. Sessions start 6 p.m. Friday and 10 a.m. and 6 p.m. Saturday and Sunday at Hershey Theatre, 15 E. Caracas Ave., Hershey. [$10 to $35 per session]
— Dorothy King will discuss her play “Susquehanna To Freedom: The Role the Susquehanna Rover Played in the Underground Railroad” 12:30 to 3 p.m. Saturday at The York County Heritage Trust, 250 E. Market St., York. The play will be performed 7 p.m. Sept. 20 at York College. [Free]
Bill Cosby has captivated audiences for decades with his sitcom and stand-up bits. See him 3 and 7 p.m. Sunday at American Music Theatre, 2425 Lincoln Highway East, Lancaster. [$69]

More events:
— The entire family will enjoy rides, games, exhibits and food beginning 4 p.m. nightly through Saturday during the Dover Firemen’s Fair at the Union Fire and Hose Company, 30 E. Canal Road, Dover. Nightly musical entertainment and carry-out dinners will be available.
— Outdoor enthusiasts will enjoy a wide array of interactive and hands on events noon to 8 p.m. Friday, 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday and 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday during the Sports and Outdoor Show at the Carlisle Fairgrounds, 1000 Bryn Mawr Road, Carlisle. [Daily admission is $10; event passes are $20]
— Shop the gown, dress and suit sale 5 to 8 p.m. Friday and 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at DreamWrights Youth and Family Theatre, 100 Carlisle Ave., York.
The Bizarro Across America tour will bring writers in the cult genre of fiction to town 6 p.m. Friday at the The York Emporium, 343 W. Market St., York. [Free]
— Motorcycles and vehicles are welcome to join the Ride, Bark, Rock for the SPCA benefit Bike Run noon Saturday at the York County SPCA, 3159 N. Susquehanna Trail, Manchester Township. Registration begins at 11 a.m. [$15 per vehicle, $20 with a passenger]
— Take a Moonlight Boat Ride on Lake Redman in Springfield Township 7:30 to 9 p.m. Sunday for a chance to explore the lake’s nocturnal life. A 30-minute astronomical tour around the sky is included. [$30 per couple if using a County-owned boat or $20 per couple for a private boat; $5 for each additional person]
